The Birth of the Dhaka Buriganga
The likeness may be fluky.Paul Percival Harris Founded the world’s first Rotary Club on 23 February, 1905, in Chicago just with three of his friends. Eighty-three years later, on Wednesday, 27 April. 1988, a group of 12 people representing a variety of professions met at the Dhaka Club to set the bottom line of what subsequently blossomed as the Rotary Club of Dhaka Buriganga.
The Group, made up mostly of experience Rotarians, exchanged ideas on how to launch a club that can pride itself as the blue ribbon club of the District 3280, a club pre-eminent in fellowship ,profound in community service and peerless in international understanding. They all agreed that it was a tall order, but an order worth talking on.
With their eyes firmly fixed on those objectives, they decided to name their club the Rotary Club of Dhaka Rajdhani. They began holding weekly meetings each Friday at the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel. Together with many other teething troubles, a technical problem arose with the name. The Group, therefore, decided to rename the club the Rotary Club of Dhaka Buriganga.
The club gratefully remembers the most effective backing it received from the District Governor, Iqbal Ansari Khan. Many obstacles that at times seemed insurmountable were easily removed due to his active help. The club also gratefully acknowledges the support it received from PP A K Deen Mohammad Khan of the Rotary Club of Dhaka Downtown, Which acted as our backed by PDG Jalal U Ahmed, who was then the District Secretary, completed the emergence of our club.
So overwhelming was their help that club the committee of Rotary international within just one month of its launch. It received the R.I charter on 27 June, 1988, only three days before the end of the Rotary year. That was the Red Letter Day of Rotary Club of Dhaka Buriganga.
The International recognition completed, the club changed the venue from Dhaka Sheraton Hotel to Sonargaon Hotel.
